Dare Report

DARE: Drug Abuse Resistance Education is taught by Sgt. Darrel Hatzenbuhler. It is taught in the 5th and 8th grades. Cpl. Hatzenbuhler is also certified to teach the D.A.R.E. Parents curriculum.

DARE  is taught in every State in the U.S. and several countries worldwide.

5th grade D.A.R.E. is a 17 week course taught in the Middle School by a Uniformed Officer. This covers several different topics such as:

  • Understanding the effects of mind altering drugs

  • Considering consequences

  • Learning resistance techniques

  • Building self esteem

  • Learning assertiveness

  • Managing stress without taking drugs

  • Having positive roll models

  • Resisting gang and group violence

The final lesson is writing an essay entitled "Taking A Stand"

Jr. High D.A.R.E. is taught to the 8th grade also at the Middle School by a Uniformed Officer. The curriculum Consists of 10 lessons. The lessons are structured more for Jr. High age students.

D.A.R.E. parents curriculum Consists of 6 lessons. It is designed to help Parents understand the problems kids are facing and to have the Parents and Officers work as a team to come up with solutions to solve these problems. The lessons are as follows:

  • Effective Communication

  • Drug Abuse Prevention - Birth Through 8 years

  • Drug Abuse Prevention and Intervention - ages 9 through adolescence

  • Youth pressure and resistance skills

  • Prevention strategies and conflict resolution

  • Panel discussions involving several people within the community including students

D.A.R.E. has come under public criticism recently because some kids are still using drugs. However, D.A.R.E. continues to be taught by more and more agencies and school districts world wide.

People must remember, that D.A.R.E. is not the magic cure-all. It's just a piece of the puzzle to reducing drug use and violence.  It takes everybody's effort in combating these problems. The key to reducing these problems starts at home! Parents must be good role models and be involved in their kids lives in a positive way! D.A.R.E. is a team effort involving parents, schools, and law enforcement.

From all of the different programs available, I feel Dare is the best program available. The only time we fail is when we don't try anything at all. Remember, there is no magic cure, we must all do our part to combat these problems.
