Marijuana Grow Operation

Two Sturgis residents, Herb and Nancy Ulrich, were arrested Thursday morning and their marijuana grow operation was seized after officers from the Sturgis Police Department, Meade County Sheriff’s Office and US Marshall's served a search warrant on their residence at 3226 Vanocker Drive.  A large number of mature marijuana plants were seized.  In addition, authorities also seized packaged marijuana, a sawed-off shotgun, and cultivating tools and equipment.

Chief of Police Jim Bush said this is a prime example of citizen-police cooperation as this started with a report from a citizen.  Chief Bush also said in his 30 years in law enforcement he has never seen this number of plants seized at one time in Sturgis.

Armed Robber Apprehended

On the evening of Wednesday, July 25th, an alert Deadwood casino security employee alerted police to a customer matching the description of the armed robber of the BJ’s Conoco Country Store in Sturgis on July 24.  A field investigation by the Deadwood Police Department and the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department resulted in the apprehension of 48 year old BILLY GERALD DICKINSON, Jr. of Muscle Shoals, Alabama for First Degree Armed Robbery and Grand Theft.

Deadwood Law Enforcement and Gaming Commission officers were alerted to Dickinson’s possible presence after he was seen earlier in the day by a Qwest employee who recognized him from security camera images seen on television newscasts.

Dickinson is incarcerated in the Meade County Jail.

Note: A major factor in the apprehension of the suspect was a quality camera system installed in the convenience store.  We were able to quickly distribute the photo that was obtained from the cameras which helped the Qwest employee identify him.
